5 Surreal Animals that actually Exist

Our world has a diverse variety of surreal animals (ranging from blue lobsters to rainbow squirrels) that are scattered across the surface of our planet.

Nature has a habit of intriguing us all the time, either through its beauty or mystery. Ranging from captivating landscapes to stunning creatures, it has all the ingredients to please our aesthetics. Some of these fantastic creatures are so fictional that it becomes outstandingly difficult to believe that they are actually real. Below is a list of some of the most surreal animals that have been reported to exist on the surface of the Earth.

White Whale

White Whale - Surreal Animals

Galon de Leche, an Albino Whale which is also known as Milk Gallon, is found on the coast of Mexico. A lot of people have claimed to have seen a white whale in the area but no one can be sure whether it is the same animal or not. According to reports, a pure-white calf was allegedly seen in 2003 but there was no photographic evidence to support these claims (unfortunately). The name “Milk Gallon” was associated with this creature in 2016 after several observations. Manuel Gonzalez, a Whale-watching Guide at the Baja California Coast, recently reported the latest sighting of the white whale and thankfully, he did capture the footage of the animal.

Blue Lobster

Blue Lobster - Surreal Animals

Generally, lobsters are brown in color and turn bright red when they are put into some boiling water. In 2017, Robin Russell, an experienced lobsterman who had only seen brown lobsters all his life, was surprised to see a blue lobster in his traps. The presence of faded pink and periwinkle areas on the creature gives it a mild rainbow look, which is actually quite fascinating. These surreal animals do turn up every once in a while but scientists haven’t been able to figure out the exact reason for their coloration. Having said that, they believe that Astaxanthin, a pigment found in lobsters, is responsible for this change in color. On the other hand, some people believe that genetic mutation could be the reason for this inconsistency and there are enough physical proofs to consider this a genuine possibility.

Wallace Bee

Wallace Bee

The name of this enormous bee comes from Alfred Russel Wallace, the man who found this giant creature for the first time in 1858. It is approximately 4 times the size of a honeybee. It disappeared from the scene rather quickly and was considered extinct when it made a comeback in 1981. This time around, an entomologist found 6 nests of these surreal animals in the Bacan Islands. Soon after this sighting, they again went into hiding. Recently, a team of scientists, who were trying to trace the world’s largest bee, found a queen Wallace in the Indonesian Islands. This was the first occasion when this species was finally recorded in the form of images and videos.

Melting Snailfish

Melting Snailfish

In 2018, a scientific expedition explored the depths of the Atacama Trench, located off the coast of Peru. The diving team traveled 7.5 kilometers into the depth of the sea to reveal 3 new species of snailfish. Despite the fact that it is one of the deepest places in the sea, researchers found a lot of invertebrates there. It came out as a massive shock for the team because that kind of pressure has the ability to destroy a human being. In order to survive in these conditions, the snailfish evolved a squishy body with almost no structural pieces. Having said that, these surreal animals couldn’t survive the normal surface pressure and died rapidly, after they were brought to the surface. The disintegration process was so fast that it looked as if they were melting.

Rainbow Squirrel

Rainbow Squirrel - Surreal Animals

This rainbow-colored squirrel, called Malabar Giant Squirrels, is easily the most beautiful among all the listed surreal animals. Some of them have bright fur that could include a handful of different colors, including purple, orange, and indigo. However, the majority of these creatures offer multiple shades of brown like rust, beige, and tan. Not only are these squirrels colorful, but they are also quite large. They are nearly a meter long and can launch themselves up to 6 meters through the air when shifting from one tree to another. The images of these surreal animals were revealed (on Instagram) by an amateur photographer, earlier this year.
