7 Fiction Movies that got the Future Horribly Wrong

Science Fiction has always intrigued humanity with its dramatics, thrill, and ferocity. This fact is clearly reflected by the success that science fiction movies have enjoyed over the years. For instance, the numbers of recently released Avengers: Endgame and John Wick 3 are simply mind-boggling, to say the least. A lot of these films try to showcase different possibilities of the future on the big screen but most of these predictions are not true. Following is a list of 7 fiction movies that got things horribly wrong.
Table of Contents
2012

The plot of this movie revolved around the Mayan prediction that the world will come to its end in 2012. The film showed that heating up of the Earth’s core leads to large-scale destruction which is caused by dramatic shifts in the climate, the eruption of the super volcano under Yellowstone, plate shifts, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Although there is a possibility of some of these events in the future, none of these catastrophes happened in 2012.
The origin of these destructive claims goes back to the discovery of a mysterious planet by Sumerians. According to the initial prediction, this planet was supposed to slam into our planet in May 2003. However, the doomsday date was revised to December 2012 when the Earth didn’t face any clash in 2003. This movie got a lot of promotion through some paranoid internet users who believed this false myth.
Blade Runner

Blade Runner is one of the most beloved fiction movies from the 1980s but the predictions it made about the future have been proven wrong. The film is basically about the story of a police officer, called Blade Runner, whose primary job was to distinguish rogue replicants (human-like robots) from humans. The plot of the movie is showing the world of 2019 but we haven’t really seen the things shown in the film like flying cars and off-world colonies.
Back to the Future II

Back to the Future II was released in 1989 but portrayed the world of 2015 and showed a lot of advanced technology, including self-lacing Nikes, hoverboards, and food rehydrators. Unfortunately (or fortunately), none of these technologies have emerged onto the scene yet and it seems as if there are some years before anyone of them could become a reality. The one thing that did come true from this fiction movie was Video Chatting.
2001: A Space Odyssey

Often regarded as one of the greatest science fiction movies, 2001: A Space Odyssey did manage to foresee a lot of futuristic technologies that did turn to reality in the coming years. Having said that, the predictions of this film with regards to space travel have been extremely poor. The movie predicted that scientists will be able to send humans to Jupiter in the near future but that didn’t happen. On the contrast, we are still trying to overcome different technical difficulties for a journey to Mars.
Mad Max

This film shows the world in a post-apocalyptic situation where a number of gangs have attained control of different parts of the desolated Earth. Although the exact cause of the apocalypse is not shown in the movie, there are hints that it had something to do with climate shifts and nuclear fallout. Despite the fact that the events of this film have not happened in the estimated timeline (the late 90s to 2018), our planet still could face a situation as horrifying as explained in this movie.
Rollerball

The story of this movie is based on an idea that the world is controlled by corporations and the only form of entertainment available is the violent roller derby. A lot of people are of the view that the idea of dividing the world into corporations rather than countries is highly unlikely despite being interesting. Similarly, the chances of roller derby becoming a popular activity are also quite low. The timeline shown in the film was 2018 and we have to say that these predictions were no way near reality.
Terminator Salvation

According to this classic science fiction movie, advanced war machines must have been introduced to the world by now but we haven’t had the privilege to build them. The entire Terminator series gives a massive NO to the idea of promoting Artificial Intelligence because of the destruction it can bring in the long run. Although we have not been able to build anything like the machines shown in this film, we are well on our way to such technologies that could bring unwanted destruction. For the time being, the Terminator series got it all wrong.
